4th U.S. Infantry

Civil War re-enactors in and around Washington state.

About Us

The 4th U.S. Infantry is a group for Civil War enthusiasts and re-enactors. It is one of many Union chapters in the Washington Civil War Association, one of the country’s largest state Civil War associations. Our forefathers, the “real” 4th U.S., fought in the Peninsular Campaign, and at Second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. They were also present at General Lee’s surrender at Appomattox.

Company C, the 4th’s principle company (think smaller “club” within the larger “chapter”/group of the even larger “association”), is based at Tacoma’s historic Fort Steilacoom (directions). We drill the first Sunday of each month. We also participate in most Washington state reenactments and many national reenactments. (Click here if you are interested in re-enacting but do not live near Tacoma.) We are open to soldiers and their families. Our members frequently get together on their own to camp, hike, and otherwise enjoy the Pacific Northwest.

The 4th’s external mission is to educate the public about Civil War times through a variety of living history events, battle reenactments, school presentations, and memorial ceremonies. Our internal mission is to enrich the lives of club members through immersion in all things Civil War – the customs, clothing, food and culture of the mid-19th century generally, and the soldier and his/her family specifically. The 4th is 501(c)(3) organization, so member expenses are tax deductible.
